The continental 3 ring peanut bit is often useful for horses with low palettes, as the lack of nutcracker action helps them to stay more settled. The double joint is often favoured by horses generally as the lack of palette pressure makes the bit more comfortable and relieves pressure on the horses bars. The plastic covering helps to soften the action of he bit, but does increase the width so is not always good for horses with small mouths. The central rolling peanut centre can help to settle a horse that tends to want to put their tongue over the bit by giving the feeling of freedom. The 3 ring Dutch gag with peanut centre is similar to the french link, but the central plastic lozenge gives a slightly more positive action on the tongue than the flat plate of the french link. Continental gag bits work by raising the bit up in the horses mouth in a similar manor to a conventional gag, but there is a limit to the extent this can happen thus lessening the severity. In addition to this, a lot of poll pressure is easily achieved on the lower setting of the dutch gag which is why ideally two reins should be used to ensure a correct contact can be maintained on the snaffle rein without poll pressure when necessary. The cheek of the peanut dutch gag involves a series of steel rings, the main snaffle ring with one smaller ring above and below. Correctly, the 3 ring bit should be used with two reins, one on the main snaffle ring, and a second on the lower smaller ring.
